Murphy to Lead Tigers in 2014

Tuesday, March 4, 2014 - 4:05 PM

Midfielder Jake Murphy will lead Claremont in 2014 after being announced as the club's new captain.

Murphy, replaces the retired Andrew Browne and is looking forward to the challenge ahead.

“It’s a bit of a dream come true,” Murphy said.

“I’ve always aspired to be a leader or captain for the footy club. I’ve got big shoes to fill, but it’s something I’m excited about.”

Murphy says developing his leadership is something he’s been working on over his 82 game career.

“I think over the last few years I’ve really tried to work on the vocal side of my leadership and just help instruct the boys whether that be in a game or at training,” Murphy said.

“Naturally I’m probably more of an action leader.

“I’ve just been trying to work on all areas to do the best job I can.”

The 24-year-old thinks age is no barrier.

“Time will tell but I’ve always thought that I’ve been a bit of a natural leader and it does come easy,” Murphy said.

“I’ve always embraced it and tried to do it as much as possible, so hopefully age isn’t going to make a difference.”

Coming off his best season in 2013 where he won Claremont's EB Cook Medal (fairest-and-best) and finished third in the Sandover Medal, Murphy is confident he can combine the captaincy with improving his own game.

“You’ve always got to look to improve,” Murphy said.

“I’ve had a really strong pre-season where I did most of the running throughout December and January, and that’s put me in really good stead.

“I’m always looking to improve as an individual and as part of the team.”

Murphy says he plans on keeping in contact with the retired Browne for advice about the role.

“I’ve spoken to him briefly,” Murphy said.

“He’s definitely someone who I’ll keep in touch with to pick his brain and source a few ideas.”

An added bonus for Murphy is the fact he has experienced players in Luke Blackwell and Trinity Handley as his vice captains.

“It’s amazing. Both of them are great leaders in their own right and two people who I respect and they’re going to help me a great deal throughout the year,” Murphy said.

Claremont’s leadership group will also include Aaron Holt, Anton Hamp, Ryan Neates and John Williams.

“A couple of those boys have had AFL experience (Hamp and Neates at West Coast, Williams at Essendon),” Murphy said.

“They’re still young in their own rights and learning the game but they’re all Claremont boys through and through.

“They’ve got the club at heart and they’ll embrace their new roles.”

With the redevelopment of Claremont Oval, a new era is about to begin at Tigerland.

“It’s exciting. The redevelopment here is going to be amazing. Everyone wants to hang around and see the evolution of it all,” Murphy said.
