Pyke Cup 2024

Monday, June 24, 2024 - 4:48 PM

Round 12 saw our Tigers retain the Pyke Cup named in honour of the champion father son duo that represented the Perth and Claremont Football Clubs respectively.

The Pyke Cup was first awarded in 2013 to recognise the significant impact of the Pyke family on the Perth and Claremont Football Clubs. A member of Perth’s 1966 premiershipteam, Frank Pyke played 130 games for the demons finishing third and second in the Sandover medal in successive seasons during his career. His son Don is a dual premiership player and former Club champion with the tigers which bookended a stellar career with the West Coast Eagles. The Pyke Cup is awarded to the team with the combined winning margin across the cumulative fixtures of the season.

It is the combined result of the H&A fixtures each season. Tigers are currently leading by 70 (give or take) points.

Frank Pyke

Frank played 130 games for Perth after making his senior debut for the club in round one of the 1959 season at the age of 17. Playing originally as a half-forward flanker, and later as an onballer, Pyke became a regular in the Perth side and finished third in the Sandover Medal in 1962 and second in 1963. He played in the club's 1966 premiership win over Subiaco.

Don Pyke

Don was recruited by Claremont for the 1987 season and played in the club's premiership win over Subiaco. He won the club’s best and fairest the following year and was recruited by the West Coast Eagles in the 1988 Draft. Making his debut in round one of the 1989 season, Pyke went on to play in both the 1992 and1994 West Coast premiership sides. A shoulder injury forced his premature retirement from playing AFL in 1996, although he returned to play in Claremont's 1996 premiership side.
