Round 10 Rogers Match Report – Claremont Tigers vs Peel Thunder:
By Sebastian Hasluck
Match Day Reporter
Claremont Rogers revel in a commanding win, as the Tigers’ key forwards go to work at dismantling the Peel Thunder defenders.
Despite the initial gloomy overcast weather, as the first siren sounded, the skies cleared, setting the stage for an exhilarating game of football.
Peel Thunder made a strong start and remained competitive until halftime. However, as the game progressed, Claremont steadily gained momentum and started to overpower the Thunder defenders, creating opportunities for the talented Tiger forwards to showcase their skills in front of goals.
Peel kicked the first goal of the game, whilst the Tigers struggled to convert their first quarter opportunities into goals on the scoreboard. However, it was in the second term that Claremont's midfielders showcased their skills, dominating ground ball gets and propelling the ball forward to the talented forward, Georgia Webb, who shone in today's match.
A goal from Peel late in the second quarter, combined with Claremont's inaccuracy, ensured that the four match points were still up for grabs going into the second half. Claremont was successful, as they went on to kick 5 goals and 3 behinds in the second half opposed to Peel Thunder's 1 goal and 1 behind.
In the end, the final score favored Claremont with a convincing margin, as they triumphed with a scoreline of 8.9 (57) to 3.1 (19).
Georgia Webb's impact on the game was undeniable, making her today’s standout player on the ground. She left a lasting impression on the scoreboard and the opposition players she skillfully evaded. Webb's agility was on full display as she effortlessly ducked, weaved, and broke free from packs. Webb pushed her way towards the goal, executing snaps, check side kicks, and converting set shots with finesse.
Webb's outstanding performance today resulted in her scoring four goals, propelling her to the second position overall in the Rogers league for goals. It's worth noting that she achieved this feat despite playing two games less due to her elevation for two league matches.
In today's match, Savanah Muir, Claremont’s other key forward, also thrived under the clearing weather conditions, contributing significantly to the goal count. Muir's three goals, achieved through well-executed snaps and composed set shots, have secured her a place among the top five goal kickers of the 2023 season so far.
Both Webb and Muir consistently demonstrate their marking skill, creating maximum opportunities for themselves even if they do not convert all of them.
India Bonadeo demonstrated another outstanding performance for Claremont, playing a more defensive role where she was instrumental in providing the team with run and carry off half-back. With her speed, she proved to be skilful at turning her opponents inside out and frequently intercepted Peel's offensive plays with her precise positioning and numerous intercept marks.
Amy Evans and Ruby Freeman also played pivotal roles in the team's success, starting in the centre and helping to shift the momentum in the second half with their ground ball gets and clearances through the midfield. Their consistent form over the past few weeks is a positive sign for the Tigers and their supporters can look forward to seeing this form continue in the upcoming 2023 season.
Looking ahead, the Tigers' next matchup is against Perth Demons at Revo Fitness Stadium on Sunday at 12pm. It is their second encounter, and the Tigers can take confidence from the fact that they achieved their highest score of the season against Perth. With advantage on their home deck, the Tigers should look to bank this win and the four points in season 2023.
