Round 4 WAFLW Match Report – Claremont Tigers Vs Subiaco Lions
By Sebastian Hasluck
Match Day Reporter
Claremont displayed a footy masterclass in what was a comprehensive and complete win against the Subiaco Lions in the twilight slot on Saturday afternoon at Leederville Oval.
Claremont scored eight unanswered goals to start the game, it was only in the last quarter that Subiaco’s lone goal was scored. Claremont’s impassable defence with a dominant offence, allowed Claremont to convincingly defeat Subiaco 10.8 (68) to 1.2 (8)
Claremont remain undefeated in season 2023 as they continue to search for a challenger in their premiership defence. The Tigers still hold their spot at the top of the ladder with a very impressive percentage of 307.69%.
In a match where Claremont dominated in all facets of the game, there were plenty of Claremont Tigers that shone and displayed their elite skills. Eva O’Donell was a clear best on ground having one of the best on-ground performances so far this year.
O’Donell kicked 3 goals and 2 behinds to go with her 20 disposals, 8 marks, 2 tackles and 4 inside-50’s. Whilst O’Donell stuffed her stat line with impressive feats it was her physical intent and dare around the ground that really impressed. Uncounted stats such as smothers and shepherds led to O’Donell’s presence being felt throughout the match. Particularly in the third quarter where she had a purple patch of two goals to go with her imposing aerial expertise.
Adele Arnup who has scored a goal in every game so far this season found her biggest accumulation on Saturday kicking 3 goals for the game, heavily contributing to the defeat of Subiaco. This comes off the back of Claremont’s 41 inside-50’s for the game, in comparison to Subiaco’s 12.
Matilda Dyke contributed towards this inside-50 count having 6 entries for the game, as she utilised her marking ability and height to transition the ball from either end of the ground. Dyke also won her ruck matchup for the day, as she had a greater influence on the game then her opposition, having 21 possessions, 8 marks, 4 tackles, 1 goal and 18 hit-outs.
Jasmin Stewart and Jayme Harken, for the fourth week in a row complemented each other’s contested game as they lead the Tigers disposal count. Both exhibit an understanding for the modern-day midfield role, as they both find avenues to score and fit a goal into their stat lines. Stewart finished up with 28 disposals, 1 goal, 2 tackles and 5 inside-50’s. Whilst Harken walked away with 23 disposals, 1 goal, 3 marks and 2 Inside-50’s.
Claremont are the best defensive team in the competition at the moment, having only conceded 52 points over 4 games, this comes off the back of a team first defence where each week a new player is able to shine and show their defensive pressure. This week Matilda Sergeant was the standout in the defensive line. Sergeant’s gut running and pursuit of the contest meant that Subiaco couldn’t create a successful opportunity until the last quarter. Sergeant recorded 12 disposals, 3 marks and Inside-50’s.
The WAFLW competition will take the Easter weekend off as a bye round to regroup and recover. The next game for the Claremont Tigers will be against South Fremantle, which will see number one and two on the ladder go head-to-head at Revo Fitness Stadium. This game will take place on the 16th of April at a 2pm time slot after the Rogers Game.
