Round 2 WAFLW Match Report – Claremont Tigers Vs Peel Thunder
Whilst this Round 2 matchup between Claremont and Peel Thunder was a low scoring affair, it was still the Tigers who dominated in all other areas of the game, taking home the four points on Sunday afternoon. This strong Claremont outing puts them two points clear on top of the 2023 season ladder.
Hosted at Revo Fitness Stadium, Claremont were able to unveil their 2022 premiership season flag to their delighted supporters, in the Tigers’ first home game of the season. Whilst Claremont struggled in the first half to capitalise on their opportunities in front of the goals, it was two goals in the second half that led them towards defeating Peel Thunder 2.13 (25) to 1.1 (7)
The Tigers’ midfield engine room was alight with dominant performances across the board as Jasmin Stewart, Jayme Harken and Jacinta Valentini all shared in the frenzy of high possession counts. Claremont ended up with 95 more possessions then Peel Thunder on the day, as they focused on holding the ball in their offensive half.
Jasmin Stewart was aggressive early, winning most of the contested possessions in the first half to set the physical tone of the game. Stewart rounded out her 31 disposal outing with 5 tackles, 3 marks and 5 inside-50 entries.
Jayme Harken was the other leading possession winner, racking up 26 disposals, 6 tackles, 5 marks and 5 inside-50 entries. Harken often linked up with Jacinta Valentini to carry the ball forward, where Valentini finished up with 26 possessions, 3 marks and 3 tackles.
Whilst the Claremont midfield stamped their mark on their ball winning capabilities, the defenders showed their physical grit through their immense tackling pressure. Claremont walked away with 10 more tackles then Peel Thunder combining for a total of 71 tackles on the day.
Emily Elkington and Tess Blackburn shone in this Claremont tackling display, as their crucial defensive efforts halted waves of Peel momentum. Several tackles from both Elkington and Blackburn stopped Peel from going forward to add to their only goal for the day. Elkington was instrumental in creating avenues to scoring, she was involved in a numerous clean forward-50 entries. Elkington finished up with 17 disposal, 10 tackles and 4 inside-50 entries. Whilst Blackburn ended up with 11 possessions, 7 tackles and 3 marks.
Whilst inaccuracy was the main narrative for the first half of the match, it was Adele Arnup in the second half, who was able to add two goals to her name, to go along with her 3 marks and 3 tackles.
Whilst inaccurate on the day, Claremont’s inside-50 count, in addition to their scoring count, shows the potential for a couple of high scoring outings in the near future. The continuation of a strong physical on field Claremont brand puts them in good stead to face Swan Districts this upcoming Sunday, at Steel Blue Oval in the afternoon slot of 2pm.
