NAIDOC ROUND PREVIEW: CLAREMONT V SOUTH FREMANTLE

Thursday, July 8, 2021 - 9:11 AM

BY DAN SCAMOZZI

WAFL action is set to resume on Saturday afternoon when the mighty Claremont Tigers face South Fremantle at Fremantle Community Bank Oval in NAIDOC Round.

NAIDOC Round celebrates the heritage, achievements and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Claremont and South Fremantle instigated WAFL NAIDOC Round in 2007 when they wore jumpers designed by Aboriginal artist Richard Walley.

The blockbuster clash will also see the teams play for the Jimmy Melbourne Cup, named in honour of Jimmy Melbourne, who was the first Indigenous Australian to play senior Australian Rules football in a major Australian football league.

Defender Francis Watson, who is on the comeback trail from a knee reconstruction, has designed a special Indigenous Guernsey which the Tigers will wear for the important occasion.

The Claremont Football Club encourages members and fans to support the Tigers, who will be aiming for their ninth win of the season.
