Congratulations to our 3 AFLW Draftees!

THE West Australian Football Commission congratulates the 11 WA players selected in the 2019 NAB AFLW Draft in Melbourne today, which included seven from WA’s AFLW 18s Academy.

This was in addition to the seven players pre-signed by West Coast and the rookie-listing of Lindal Rohde from Fremantle’s AFLW Academy.

WAFC CEO Gavin Taylor congratulated all of the players selected and said he was looking forward to seeing the continued growth of female football in Western Australia, with both AFL clubs now having an AFLW team supported by a strong State League competition.

“With the WAFL Women’s competition established this year and West Coast set to join Fremantle in the AFLW competition next season, I look forward to seeing female football in WA continue to go from strength to strength,” he said.

“I congratulate all of the players selected in today’s AFLW draft as well as their clubs, coaches, family and friends who have supported them along the way.”

“This result shows what a great job our Junior, Youth Girls, WAFLW and WA Women's Football League clubs and coaches are doing to grow female football and provide a complete pathway for all players.”

“I would also like to acknowledge the WAFC staff, coaches and support staff involved with our AFLW State Academy for their role in developing these players, with all of this year’s draftees previously being involved in State 18s or senior Academy programs.”

“Female football participation in WA has tripled in the last 5 years, seeing the ratio of female players at footy clubs increase from 1-in-33 to 1-in-10, which is a fantastic result.”

“There's also around 90,000 females pulling on a pair of football boots in Auskick and school-based competitions.”

“The WAFC will continuing providing the support required so that all of these participants have the opportunity to reach their full potential on the football field,” he said.
