WAFLW League Round 13: Peel v Claremont
Claremont travelled to David Gray Arena in Mandurah on Saturday afternoon for a twilight match against bottom placed Peel Thunder. Peel started the match firing on all cylinders, scoring two quick goals early in the first quarter. The Tigers were able to even the ledger after some slick ball movement from Laura Pugh, with Emily Bonser and Sarah Garstone scoring Claremont's two first quarter goals. Peel responded quickly via a centre clearance and a run on goal to take a 4 point lead into quarter time.
The Tigers dominated possession in the second quarter but overuse by handball and inefficient forward entries saw them down by 10 points at half time. Peel were able to capitalise on their speed going forward scoring 2 goals, with Claremont adding only a single point to their first quarter total.
The Tigers came out of the main break firing with Bella Zadnik, Adele Arnup and Chloe Colegate getting first use of the ball out of the middle and strong clearances across the ground. Peel continued to drive the ball forward scoring mid way through the third quarter, however some strong defensive efforts and intercept marks from Jacinta Valentini, Jess Low and Brooke Hongell shut off Peel's forward options. Sophie McDonald slotted two goals, Sarah Garstone added another to her ledger and Arnup scored just before the siren to see Claremont ahead by 2 points going into the final quarter.
The intensity lifted again in the final quarter with both sides pushing deep into their forward halves early but the Tigers were able to capitalise on their entries with goals to Bonser and Krystle Spanos sealing the victory 8.4 to 5.3. The Tigers will take on Subiaco at Leederville on Saturday, 17 Aug 19 with a view to continue their winning form leading into the finals series.
