VALE: WAL MASKIELL
WALTER KENNETH MASKIELL
1926 - 2017
The Claremont Football Club is morning with the passing of one of the Club's longest serving and influential Presidents Walter Maskiell or Wal as he was affectionately known.
Wal passed away last Sunday with his family beside him and his funeral will be held at 12.30pm on Wednesday 28 June at Karrakatta Cemetery.Wal served on the Committee of the Club for a long period before taking over as President in 1976. He remained President until 1986 making him the equal third longest serving President in the Club's 127 year history. Wal was highly regarded amongst his peers at WAFL Club level and led the Club from a Premiership drought, the previous Premiership being 1964, through seven finals campaigns, competing in three Grand Finals and winning the Premiership in 1981.
Off the field he led a very progressive Board of Directors who introduced new marketing and sponsorship initiatives which were the envy of other WAFL Clubs.
He also oversaw the implementation of a highly successful junior development program in the Club's metropolitan and regional zones which had been developed by the late Monty Buttfield and others. The foundations of this program are still in place today and have resulted in scores of junior Claremont footballers go on to establish themselves at the highest levels of football in Australia.
The hallmark of Wal’s decade of Presidency was the stability that the Club achieved both on and off the field.
Wal was a Life Member of the Claremont Football Club, a Life Member of the WA Football Commission and served as Secretary/ Treasurer of the WAFC Life Member’s Association for many years.
Wal continued to support and follow the Club for many years after his Presidency until his recent ill health prevented him from coming down to the Club.
The Claremont Football Club extends its condolences to Wal’s son Graham and daughter Lynda and all the Maskiell family.
Wal was a true champion of this Club.
