Tiger Cubs Star for WA
By Dan Scamozzi
Claremont’s Jake Patmore, Callan England and Oliver Eastland all played important roles in Western Australia’s 40-point win against the Allies in the State 18s at Leederville Oval.
England collected 13 disposals in the opening term and finished with a game-high 26, with Patmore also busy, while Eastland kicked two impressive goals in the second quarter of the 12.12 (84) to 6.8 (44) win.
The result gives WA two wins from their opening three games of the national championships, following their thrilling one-point win against South Australia 15 days earlier.
After a scrappy first term, marred by turnovers from both teams, in which WA held a seven-point lead at quarter-time, the Black Swans dominated the second term, kicking four goals to one before the Allies responded in the third.
Fortunately for WA, the Allies were unable to turn their ascendancy into scoreboard pressure and kicked 3.4 for the term, with the Black Swans holding a 16-point lead at the final change.
WA, after being implored by coach Peter Sumich to improve their run and spread, then lifted a gear as they did in the second term, with another four-goal-to-one quarter to cap off a strong performance on a splendid afternoon for football.
WA next face Vic Country at Etihad Stadium on Friday.
WA State 16s kicked the last four goals of the game to overcome a 18-point deficit and record a thrilling six-point win over South Australia, 12.13 (85) to 11.13 (79) in the curtain-raiser.
Meanwhile, WA State 17s lost to South Australia, 11.10 (76) to 13.7 (85) at HBF Arena.
