The new AFL season again sees a multitude of Claremont alumni plying their trade at the highest level, and there was yet another new face making their AFL debut and adding his name to the famed Tigers talent pipeline in round 1 over the weekend. Mitch McGovern continued his family’s rich association with the nations premier football competition as he played his first AFL game with the Adelaide Crows in a narrow defeat to North Melbourne.
Taken at pick 43 in the 2014 national draft, Mitch’s first Season in the AFL was hampered by niggling injuries, but a strong preseason in which he featured in all of the crows NAB Challenge matches has seen McGovern rewarded with his debut AFL game.
After a wonderful debut colts season at Claremont in 2012 where he kicked 30 goals, McGovern’s second season with the tigers was ravaged by persistent injuries and he was only able to register the sole reserves match. 2014 however was a break out for Mitch and although still battling injuries through much of the preseason that year, he made his League debut in round 10 of that season and went on to play in 11 of the following 12 matches. Utilised mainly across half forward, his vertical leap and strong contested marking are hallmarks of the young tyro’s game. Mitch also possesses excellent skills and agility for a big man all of which caught the eye of astute recruiters at Adelaide and landed him in the South Australian capital.
On behalf of the Claremont Football Club, congratulations to Mitch and the entire McGovern family and we look forward to watching you forge a long and exciting career in the AFL.
